Utah Judo Class this week… Harai who?
In both classes this week we have been focussing on a move called Harai Goshi. Now, I gotta tell you, as a fairly big guy, my immediate reaction to this move (under my breath) was “This move sucks. I feels so much like the head throw, but I really like the head throw better… I’ll never throw this move.” I stuck with that thought until last night when I was practicing against Sean. Now, I mentioned I’m a fairly big guy. Sean’s a bigger guy. Trying to throw a head throw on him is not all that easy. It turns into a game where I am trying to muscle him. Now luckily for me, I have super-human strength, so such a move is still achievable. But I can see how a mortal might have problems ![]()
So instead I started focussing more in earnest on the Harai Goshi. I was impressed. If I timed it right it was pretty easy to get a guy as big as Sean hitting the mat pretty good.
We topped that off with a bit more work on the arm bar. I am still not completely sold on the arm bar either… as a wrestler I tend to like a side control position, then working for a pin or other move from there. But am guessing that, like the Harai Goshi, I just haven’t got the feel for it yet.
Also, I wanted to upload a few pictures from class… hope you all enjoy them.
Below we have:

Sean is still feeling the effects of hitting the mat from your super-human strength!
