Utah Judo Class Review April 1st: Momma had a baby and it’s head popped off
You know, when I was a little kid we used to sit and pick dandy lions, and recite this little rhyme: “Momma had a baby and its… head popped off.” Right at the point of heads popping off we would flick our thumb and pop the topp off of the flower (You know, I never realized how really psychologically broken that little song was until right now.)
Well, we worked on a move in Judo class last night that was vey much the same thing. So any of you wrestlers out there who might be reading this (that means you Seth) are probably pretty familair with a move called the head-and-arm. This is a throw where you basically flip the person, and then hold on to the head and arm as the go down. Once on the ground the attacker generally has their back to the “victim” (more or less), while they crank the head and arm to keep them stuck and pinned.
So what we learned is a slight change to that. Think of the head and arm from wrestling class… your hands are clenched near your body, and the far side of the victim’s neck has your elbow wrapped around it. for this move however, we change that up by turning our stomach more toward the victim, and take your right hand and bring it up so your right fist is against the left side of the victims neck (rather than your right arm wrapping around under their head.) Now reach your left hand under their head, and grab your right first. Squeeze real hard… this should be driving your right fist right into the side of their neck, and probably hurts like crap! This can be used to submit a person, and even if they ignore the pain and refuse to tap, and is uncomfortable enough that it makes it harder for them to escpae. I really, really liked this one.
So if you’re a wrestler out there… go grab someone and give this a try. You’ll be glad you did!
