Back in Utah… Ready for some Judo

Oh Goodness, it’s great to be back.  Florida was nice, but 90+ degree temps and high humidity for two and a half weeks is more than I can stand.  And I am really missing throwing people around.

But I don’t want to leave you with no comments on actual Judo… so I wanted to share some insight I cleaned on my vacation… from one of the true masters:  Yoda.  Yado states, “Do or do not.  There is no try.”  I was actually struck by this comment as I stood dodging lightsabers from toddlers in the gift shop.  This is exactly the key to Judo throws.  I can’t tell you how much mike has drummed into our heads that we need to commit ourselves to the throw.

This also makes me think about the UFC, and Utah’s Ultimate Combat Experience… As any of you who follow this blog know, I am a huge fan.  I cannot tell you hopw many times I have screamed at the TV because someone is throwing weak, little punches.  I hate it when someone throws punches so light, that even if the guy walked right into it it wouldn’t hurt him.  WHY THROW IT???  You’re wasting energy.

The same is true with throws.  There is no try.  Throw Damnit!  Just do.  Now does this mean that you won’t ever fail?  No.  But that’s not because you didn’t “do.”  It’s becaus your opponent “did” better.  The only real failure in a throw though is when it would not have succeeded anyway.  When you beat yourself, and waste your energy.

Take a page from Yoda folks.  Judo from Degoba.
