Missing a few Judo Classes… But watching Judo meet Wrestling
Sorry for the lack of posts folks… We have missed a few Judo classes in the last week, and unfortunately will have to miss the ones on Tuesday of this week as well.
But the reason we will miss Tuesday’s class is pretty exciting. My son, Ty, who does Judo with me is 14 years old now, and in the 9th grade. In most schools here that’s still Junior High. Ty and I have been doing Judo for just over a year now.
Thursday of last week Ty went over and talked to the Wrestling coach at the High School (Riverton High), and was able to get onto the wrestling team. So now he goes to school during the day, Has Wrestling from 3:00 to 5:30 Monday through Friday, has Judo at Hidden Valley on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00-8:00, as well as 9:00-11:00 Saturdays. He also has Lehi Judo Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:15-9:30 (But it often goes later.) So basically, he as 12.5 hours of wrestling and nearly 10 hours of Judo each week.
It is really neat to watch him toughen up.
I am also really excited to see him start to cherry-pick techniques from the two styles. As an ex-high school wrestler, I know that most wrestlers have not had to deal with the upper body game that a good Judo player can throw at them (“Throw” being the operative word
). But also, I think that the speed, power, and conditioning of wrestling will really help his Judo game.
I ahve had person experience coming from wrestling to Judo, but not going to wrestling from Judo. Has anyone done that, or had your children do it? What did you find as being advantages they took with them that the wrestlers weren’t used to?
