The Zen of Judo

In my previous post I commented on my own frustration about my abilities.  Well, I can’t say that I have found the ultimate cure, nor that I will not find myself frustrated again… But I will say that I found something that made class his last week more enjoyable:

In the words of Frankie: RELAX.

I went into class without worrying if I was doing well or not.  By not caring if I did well, it removed my stress such that I could be more aware of what was really going on.  I think I did better… and even if I didn’t I definitely observed more, and was aware of my own Kazushi (balance), as well as that of my opponent.

I had to stop caring about my own performance, and just embrace the experience.  Okay, I know that sounds way more zen and metha-what the crap than I normally think, but it really just comes down to this:  Have fun with it.

I have to admit that it was easier for me last class because I was working with my son, and I didn’t feel like I had anything to prove to him.  I need to be sure to have the self control to have this same level of relaxed learning experience with everyone.

Anyway, that’s the plan :)
